is metronidazole safe during the first trimester of pregnancy?

Its pregnancy category B. It means animal studies have failed to show adverse effects but no adequate and well controlled studies in women. So it can be given by weighting the risk versus benefit ratio. Please elaborate the condition if you like to ask for more information. Thank you!
